English Environment

Removing the psychological barrier among students and teachers that studying in a CMI school is destined to be a poor English language learner is the first challenge the school needs to cope with. In order to increase students’ language exposure through various communication channels, the school management adopted a whole-school language approach in curriculum planning.

Firstly, with the understanding that quality teaching and learning is crucial to the development of the English competence of the students, the school management pays a lot of effort in developing the expertise and professionalism of the English language teachers. A wide range of teaching methodologies and strategies are employed to boost students’ interest in learning English.

Holding the same belief of enhancing CLCT students’ English proficiency through increasing their exposure to authentic English, making sure that students learn effectively in their own mother tongue, the school allocated more resources to the English Department. The Department has a team of 17 teachers. The implementation of English split group system is one of the well-known characteristics of English teaching at CLCT. It is implemented at all levels. Each form is divided into 6 groups. Increasing number of split groups has not only greatly facilitated English teaching and learning, but also enabled the English teachers to conduct their lessons more effectively and more attention can be offered to individual students.

Time-tabling gives priority for English to have more double lessons and prime learning hours in the morning when the students are in their peak learning condition.

In order to nurture a rich English language environment, the school management has placed considerable emphasis on learning outside the classroom. Throughout the years, a variety of form-based activities like inter-class drama competition and presentation contest have been held. Students also have the opportunities to meet other students in CMI schools by participating in all kinds of inter-school competition so that they have the chance to learn and share their experiences together. The school also organized school clubs such as English Ambassadors, English Farm, Campus TV and the English Corner.
